Ajameti Strict Nature Reserve as it is today was formed in 1946 and the aim of its establishing was to preserve the rare relicts – Imeretian oak(Quercus imeretina) and Zelkova tree (Zelkova carpinifolia). Forests cover 4738 ha of the Managed Nature Reserve. Ajameti Managed Nature Reserve is located in Baghdati district at 265 km distance from Tbilisi and at 15 km distance from Kutaisi, on the Rioni plain and consists of three districts: Ajameti, Vartsikhe and Sviri.
Total area of the Managed Nature Reserve is 5117 ha, out of which 4738 ha is covered with forest. The Managed Nature Reserve is located at a distance of one and a half km from Vartsikhe borough. The terrirory of the Managed Nature Reserve is stretched for about 13 km from the east to the west. Its average width is 3 km and in the widest area the width reaches 5 km. The terrirory of the Managed Nature Reserve is constructed with the sediments of the Miocene, Oligocene and Eocene age. Here the solid and glutinous clay of Quaternary age of lacustrine-alluvial origin can be found.
